How is Concrete Recycled?
When a building or highway is ready to get torn down, Hrustic Brothers will provide concrete demolition and removal services. The large pieces are brought back to our facility where they are crushed down to smaller pieces, sorted, screened and recycled into other products with different uses: 57 stone for drainage, road base under asphalt, or fines that are used under paver driveways and patios. Hrustic Brothers can even deliver these repurposed materials back to the construction site to provide lower-cost, wraparound services for construction needs.
Benefits of Recycled Concrete and Concrete Recycling Solutions
Environmental – Utilizing recycled concrete saves construction materials from going to landfills and conserves the natural resources required to mine new materials. It also has a lower carbon footprint since it requires 60-75% less energy to produce, thereby reducing greenhouse emissions by 40-65% and lowering natural environment impact. Recycling one ton of concrete saves about 1,360 gallons of water and 1,984 pounds of landfill waste.
Infrastructure – Most states allow recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) for pavement base applications. In regards to road base, crushed, recycled concrete is more economical than other aggregates like limestone because it has a lower unit weight, giving you a higher yield per ton and more material for the same price. It compacts more consistently, locking up to create a stable foundation that can transfer loads well over Florida’s loose, sandy subgrades. RCA is also generally considered stronger and more durable than limestone, lasts 2-4 times longer than asphalt, and can withstand extreme weather conditions.
Economical – Contractors can enjoy the cost-effective nature of concrete recycling services, especially with a company like Hrustic Brothers. With local availability, lower production and transportation costs and reduced disposal costs, Hrustic Brothers has the ability to pass along the end-to-end savings on demolition and construction fill material costs.
Availability – In a constantly growing area with significant demolition and infrastructure improvements, like Northeast Florida, recycled concrete aggregate is widely available, ensuring a reliable local supply. Delivery is faster and more convenient when locally sourced. Plus, the energy needs for aggregate delivery services can be reduced by up to 85% when sourced locally.
